Although very historic and quite entertaining, I found bullfighting to be a bit inhumane. Anyways…this was a crazy experience.

We all know that Europeans have no social bubble, meaning that they are completely ok with being CLOSE to one another.

This bull ring had about 3,000 seats but I am sure we managed to fit 5,000 people into it. Not for the claustrophobic for sure.

We got there late, so finding our seats was one of the most anxiety-stricken experiences that I’ve ever been through.

“Excuse me guys, Here’s comes a 6′3″ American with an oversized backpack to sit on your lap.” I managed, took advantage of the language barrier and buried my face in my hasselblad xpan the whole time.

Scott Byerly Takes the Steps

When it comes to the sport of wake, no bigger name is more predominant than that of Scott Byerly.

As an innovative person that he is, coming up with new creative ideas for photos, tricks, angles, whatever…he knows what looks good and how to do it right.

This setup came off a start-up pool that ran the length of the dock and toward the lake. Toward the end of the start-up pool was a decent ollie down to the lake if you so chose.

Or option B, which was the downrail that decended over several wood steps. What you can’t see are all the people that were out there all over the dock. I didn’t have much room go, other than getting in the water and shooting up underneath him a bit and toward the sunlight.

I ducked a few flying boards over my head from the previous failed attempts, but I wasn’t about to give up my spot/angle.

By the time Scott rode I was ready for the crashes and possible carnage to the dome, but luckily that never happened.

Scott stepped up and stuck it first go…or should I say stepped down?

Brian Grubb down below on Radar Lake

Back in the good old days, Hyperlite would throw an annual team trip to their local and private hotspot, Radar Lake. I was fortunate enough to be invited when the Sidewayz crew came into town to shoot footage for the then-upcoming “Welcome” video.

Getting in the helicopter, let alone shooting from it, is a mixed bag of emotions. All the unsettling questions always race through my mind.

On top of that, the new relationship between photog/videographer and pilot is a foreign feeling. There is a lot of silent, blind trust among those in the chopper. Feelings aside, what’s going on beneath us is sometimes the best distraction because you don’t have time to look up at anything else.

Grubb always kills it when there is a chopper overhead and this afternoon was no different. Our pilot got us into position shooting down toward the glare as Grubb attempted some wake-to-wake kickflips. This silohouette and angle reminds me of those special moments we all shared together out on the epic Radar Lake.

Thomas Horrell skates Barcelona

I shot this photo on my Litman. I love that camera…it is flat out amazing.

This was in Barcelona, yet another amazing trip. I think we covered that whole city on our skateboards. We skated every well-known spot we had seen on the videos.

It was very relaxed trip from a photo standpoint. I really just took on my own assignment and shot predominantly polaroids in the Litman 4×5.

At the end of the trip I had a whole book full of them. It really story-boarded the trip well. This photo of Thomas was a standout for sure.

Wes Brisco flash ghost

Our week-long winching tangent kicked off with Wes Brisco informing me of this spot he knew of or thought he had seen on the side of the road. Right off the bat, it was a bit of a goose chase trying to locate what he “thought” he saw. Not really the ideal situation to plan an optimal lighting situation etc, but we made it work.

The week of rain filled this retention pond just perfect. The ollie was challenging yet still seemed comfortable for him. We scoped the spot, looked around for our chances of getting caught, and just went for it. I set up a light in the tree, then drove around to the other side where my truck was parked with the winch. Wes’ parnter in crime, Nick V, was on winch speed duty.

We got several attempts at it. Nobody knew we were there despite the loud noise of the winch. It was kind of stealthy in fact, even though it was on private business property. It gave us confidence nice and early in the week for more days of winch trespassing to follow.

See if you can identify these people.

Notice the guy front center dressed as Aaron Reed?

I got lots of pics from the whole night. I was a blind photographer with a boner so I was just snapping pics all night.
Not all were appropriate, but damn they were funny.

This is one of my all time favorite photos I’ve taken of Thomas.

I think it describes his vibe perfectly. He’s always a bit tough to make out and laying up in the shadows….that’s Thomas.

We were walking the streets of Prague with the DVS crew and I just shot it from the hip as we were walking. There’s a feeling that I can’t describe when I travel with those guys. It just works….

As Easy As Collin Harrington

As easy as…getting into Canada without a passport.

So they put us all on the same flight…me, Meddock, Collin, Reed, S. Bonifay, Tino and probably others. I just forget very easily.

We were on our way to the final Brostock up on Lake Shuswap in BC. We knew what the week had in store for us, so we got started early. We are all conveniently members of the Delta Crown Room and that equates to fun travel day.

This shot was taken just before we cleared customs in Kelowna. You gotta love those small town airports. We were obnoxious Americans making a lot of noise and they let us in with smiles.

Shane even lost his passport amongst the mayhem and they took his word. Wow. Oh Canada.

September Bender 2007

September Bender begins

Subject: September Bender, Liquid Force BroStock

Sept 1st–Ahhh yes, the “September Bender” as I like to call it.

Every September tends to be an absolute crazy, busy, peak season of parties, business, expo, traveling, everything…you name it. Basically, the bender of excuses to get smashed because such and such is in town, there’s a party over here, party over there, whozy whatzy is leaving town, what’s-er-face is just arriving, yada, yada, yada.

Well, this past September was no different. This time I was in Lake Shuswap Canada with the LF BroStock posse (no strangers to the September Bender).

Maybe this was a bad idea, but the night before on Aug. 31st I thought it was a good idea to start reminding people of our “industry national holiday” that followed the day after. Not many of them really needed reminders, but it was the thought that counts right?

So, on schedule as usual, we brought in the ‘07 September Bender eve with a night of chaos, Canadians, and canned beer. Not a night of memories by any means but certainly a good kickoff party for the rest of the month that followed.

No Big Deal at Gatorland

Gator Wrestler YOU page

Yeah, that would be a gator wrestler reading The Standerd.

At the University of Florida, there’s a student-run mag called Orange&Blue that is published each semester. I volunteered to take a bunch of shots for them, especially the ones near Orlando, my hometown.

One assignment I picked up was to visit a gator wrestler named Bret out at Gatorland.

Bret acts like it’s no big deal, jump into the gator pit and take some pics. What!?

We’re sitting on sand with the little guys and a moat surrounding us. I get a few of the shots Orange&Blue wanted, then say, “Hey Bret hold that gator for one more sec…I’ll explain later,” and hand him the most recent copy of The Standerd.

Thanks Bret!
