I decided to catch a ride on the party bus out to the 1.2 party because I knew I might consume some adult beverages. I shot two rolls that day and my dog ate the color one so all I got was ten black and white shots. Sorry I wasn’t the best event photographer James!

Ok, anyone who has been wakeboarding for good amount time knows those “moments” that come every so often that are deemed unforgettable. Most of the time you can’t really explain it….things just line up and time stands still as if anything that is happening outside of that moment doesn’t matter at all. Well, we had one right here. This was deep on Negro River in Brazil. We finally had some amazing weather, no rain and glassy water all afternoon. We decided to just point the boat in one direction and ride as far as we could. Right at dusk, we reached a point in the river that just opened up into this huge lake. It was completely surreal. You could not distinguish the difference in the water and the sky. I have never seen water that calm, in that big of an area, ever. The sunset was magical and there was not another person for miles. We were alone in huge oasis. Definitely one of those moments that i will never forget. Take me back.

Another great application for the seemingly limitless libraries of stuff I save on my hard-drive. I’m a self admitted pack-rat when it comes to images and stock/textures/brushes I find online. This piece was a rare one that brought them all together to a great piece. The subject is actually a co-worker of mine that volunteered to do some blue screen shots for a totally unrelated motion graphics project. I just happen to have my SLR there the day of filming and brought it out for a few shots at the end. With no purpose in mind I threw them on my computer and left them to be. When putting this piece together I had some really great vintage pieces that were public-domain I wanted to use from the 1950’s. When playing around the the four layered photos and typography I really wanted a figure with a clean background that would fit into this high contrast style I had going. Just so happens I had a perfect one.
I had some big problems fitting the figure in. First of all female figures do not contrast well. In my experience it general it destroys their faces and takes away the feminine allure they have. However in this one after much tweaking and the supportive elements such as the umbrella and wings I was satisfied. In particular I love the textures that show in this and the play with the typography. I just love the idea of four totally unrelated photos in time and content can come together to make something visually interesting.

This is a shot of Eric Ruck I took while going with Joey on one of his shoots. He probably saw in his head the exact shot that he wanted to get out of that day. I on the other hand, had no idea, and was just shooting from the boat some. As the boat kept turning around, going into the sun and away from the sun, I kept changing my settings… I really liked how the silhouettes were looking. Before I even got home to sit down and look at the pictures I knew this one was sweet.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, this was one of the best unscripted trips I’ve ever been on. Now that I think about it more, probably the only unscripted trip that I dare to take part of. I might venture into again only because this one was so great.
I took this shot from the same perch I was sitting on when Collin stuck that 3 in front of my face for the cover shot. A few passes by, he would do a 3, land, then cut back and slaysh almost directly underneath me. Not really on purpose however. It was partly due to Collin trying to avoid hitting the concrete pillar I was standing on. The one that holds up the bridge over my head….yeah, not small.
On one of the first passes, Collin ran the same line but I wasn’t ready for it. Heel 3, land, cutback toward wake, then slaysh a bucket just before the bridge shadow hit him. After witnessing the first one with my own eyes and not through the lens, I thought, “damn, that looked sick, he’s gotta do that again…a few more times. Maybe this next time I’ll be ready.”

That sun is intense. I can feel it just looking at this photo. We were up on top of the houseboat on Lake Shasta in the middle of the day. I just setup one light behind Megan and fired away. I really liked what we got, so I shot everyone this way. I had Matt Manzari holding my flash for me and his feet were on fire. The deck was so hot you couldn’t stand there barefooted. Thanks Matt and Megan, I appreciate your dedication to helping capture a moment.

We took the most amazing trip to Amazon River with the Oakley team.
This was our last day there and half the crew been up all night puking. Everyone got hit at once. Amber, Danny, and Mark Shonka were all sick.
But you know what, it barely phased them. Amazing. They got through it and were right back on the water.
Shonka was right behind me hanging out of the helicopter. Amber rode so well. We got a ton of good stuff that morning and even had time to take a hour-long heli tour to see all the places we traveled to all week.
I always love how easy going they are in other countries when it comes to precautions. I mean don’t get me wrong, the helicopter was safe, but we could do just about anything we wanted to up in that bird.

So Kyle has thing where he collects a T-shirt from every state that he’s been in.
When he showed up to Lake Powell this year, this is how he greeted everyone. First thing he did when he got to Utah was get a shirt. I think it was seriously the only shirt that he wore all week.
And those pants…holy crap they are amazing. I think they were sweat pants with the MC Hammer cut from ‘91. He definitely wore those things all week until they eventually began to disintegrate off of him. Ha.
The kid will keep you guessing. He brings some great energy to the table.

This was taken on a shoot up in Wisconsin last summer. I was up there doing a shoot on a private lake for Nautique. The water up there was super clean and clear, casting a greenish tint. The sandy bottom made a perfect setup to shoot a few “miniwaves.”
Even with the smallest of boat wakes, created by the Ski Nautique 196, the wakes broke on shore in beautiful symmetry. Of all the “miniwaves” we shot, this was the only one that had consistent shape and frequency.
It’s amazing the difference in the photographs when we shot glassy water conditions versus windblown chop. Many of the images didn’t make the cut strictly because of the busy water. It was difficult to keep the shape and ‘tube’ of the wave if there were any distracting factors.
