Lake Georgia, FL.
Good ol’ George on Lake Georgia, coincidence? Who knows? But I do know it’s no coincidence how consistent he can ride that skate.
We shot this last winter I believe. I remember it being freezing cold outside, wearing a full suit, and floating in the water for about an hour while George and Byerly rode passes by me.
We got a lot of great shots that day. In fact, in book 1.2 George is busting a huge benihana from this angle, also shot on that same morning.
This angle is cutting it close to the “danger zone” as some might call it. The beninana was deliberately driven a bit farther away, just because George is edging directly at me with much more speed.
For these kick-flip attempts, we brought the boat in closer to where I was floating. By the time the wake past me, George would be right in my face.
It’s closer in real life, but this lens I used make it looks about 3 feet farther than it really is.
Kick-flips in mirror are closer than they appear.

I think was about 3am when we returned from our night out on the town when we met these dudes at the hotel bar.
They were celebrating a friend’s scottish wedding. Dressing in their traditional kilts apparently is how you do it on that side of the pond. It might be weird to us, but custom to them. “Man in a skirt? No way,” some would say, but come on… it’s culturally pimp. I think it’s awesome.
Thanks to Ike, the cowboy hat snuck in the photo and even Danno the Manno’s hat made the cut. How? I don’t know. Why? I have no idea.
But, issue 1.2 tied it all together.

I wanted to shoot some 16mm of Scott riding his bike for RLAND. You know, just in case you haven’t seen one of the other 16 videos that have him riding his chopper.
It went pretty well, and at a stoplight I pulled out my still camera to get this shot. Also just in case you didn’t know, Scott is a bad ass.

On our recent trip to Ireland, we were pretty damn die hard to get a castle in the background of at least one photo. Watkins and I saw this bench that we thought we could lie on it’s side to jib. “Oh yeah, this will work great! We’ll shoot it at this angle, castle there, flash here, Watkins jibbin here, yeah basic, let’s do it.” It went something like that. “SNAP!”
“Sweet, Watkins! I think we got one. One with you directly blocking the view of the castle in the background.” What are the chances?

This photo is actually really sad, this was the last photo ever taken of barge boarding on Lake Okoboji, IA. It was always our tradition that every 4th of July we would pull ourselves out of bed to go and ride at sunrise behind the barge with a big fat American flag in hand right across the center of the lake. It was always a fun experience for everybody who could get up that early, we would have other boats follow us around the lake, as well the riding was sick with the huge elevation and wake. Kevin Kooima and his barge crew would give us tows all morning and never ask for a dime in return.
Unfortunately the three year tradition will have to end for the 2008 independence celebration. In a totally unrelated filming project that was going to have some professionals ride behind the barge a few months later we were shot out of the water so to say. In the process of filing for insurance for the production crew the Barge’s insurance company said absolutely not, and if they ever saw or heard of him allowing such “dangerous” behavior they would drop them from their insurance policy immediately. With such a threat with no lean in policy there was no way he could let us ride behind big blue anymore. The last memories will have to live in the 1.3 forever.

I traveled to Lake Roosevelt, Washington last summer for the 08 CWB product shoot. The weather was nice and cool at night. Cool enough that most of the people on the boat slept on the roof and stared up at the stars. They took all the bedding out of the living rooms and set up shop upstairs to get the incredible view of the bright sky.
Before I went to bed that night, I walked up on the shore bank and set up my camera and tripod. I pointed it toward the sky and did some multiple minute exposures to capture the stars and glowing light coming from the houseboat windows. I must of sat up on that hill for about an hour, timing exposures and counting over and over again. The arcing streak from the stars is the earth moving while the shutter is open.

So, this is a shot of hundreds of pages of Book 1.2 after rollin’ off the press last summer. The printing process is pretty intense. Lots of checking and double checking and learning about how the whole deal works. Basically, three months of work and an even longer stretch of planning all come flying out of this crazy machine with colored ink dripping into it. Had to document all of those hours and colors finally coming together.

Straight up as an artist and designer this is me unfiltered. If I could spend the rest of my days doing work, it would be in the same vein as this. It was just purely by luck that I got this opportunity to do some artwork like this.
In this spread is my buddy Tyson Kaminska. Tyson and I are buddies from growing up back in the day. It was Christmas break last year when I had this idea with some of these old beat up studio lights I “borrowed” from our design department. He was always down for some different photos so we went out one night and got a few rad shots in the middle of the street infront of where I lived.
I always loved those shots but didn’t really have a use for them, until this spread. I took some vintage photos from the library of congress database which offers some great public-domain photos you can use. A little bit of blending modes later and some leveling gave me a great canvas. The actual subject is a little deeper; I wanted to use this particular picture of Tyson because of his downward turned head, his highlights in his hair and the contrast from his coat and jeans I thought made an exceptional illustrative image to use.
It may sound a little odd but I actually prefer to have his face unshown, to me it allows the viewer to invent or even to put themselves into the piece a little bit and create the story and emotion on a much more personal level.
The wings, unlike what some people think, do not hold much religious significance that perhaps the outstretched arms may suggest. Rather I think of it as offering a sort of elegance and delicate feel to the piece while still allowing a masculine idea of the rider and skate. As well the overlaid typography is of what I feel to be a similar emotional feel to the wings, the typeface is Didot which has a nice play on edges and serifs.
I love the images that were chosen to overlay the piece, Soderlind’s “318 years in the making” (shown in Book 1.3 on these pages) seems to remind me of the outstretched arms of my skater in the previous page.

I took this photo of Pat last January when we left the Projects for a day and went downtown to scout out a site for a possible pool jam. The spot was pretty unique in that it was on the roof of a high-rise, twenty stories up. I don’t know if or when this event may go on, but we all know Pat is the man when it comes to setting up and pulling off rad rail contests.
I brought my Holga along , and snapped this double-exposure of Pat as he walked along discussing dimensions with the owner. I especially like the Vignetting that the plastic, light leaking camera like the Holga gives.

Wow! Rider, photographer, and now fashion icon.
Aaron Reed can make a statement with the best of them. Reed had some awesome moments during the Liquid Force BroStock in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. There is never a dull second when he is around.
He ran full speed, stoagies in one hand, lighter in the other, down a hundred-yard grass field at 6 in the morning. Having energy like that early in the morning isn’t always an easy task.
Reed, however, shows up on time, smiles on, and kills it everytime he rides…short-shorts or not.
