It’s funny how life works. This past March I flew down to Orlando to assist Joey Meddock and Josh Letchworth for an assignment from school and with portfolio review looming near on the horizon I wanted to get as much wake footage as possible for my portfolio.
At the end of the week Josh was going to be shooting Keith Lidberg out at the Projects with Ronn for the new Gator wake vid Transgression and allowed me to tag along.
Before leaving for my trip down to FL, one of my instructors from Hallmark had told me to jot down a shot list. Well it’s hard to create a shot list when you don’t know when, where, or who you’ll be shooting. But as soon as I got to the Projects one of the shots I knew I wanted, just as a memento for myself, was a wide shot that captured everything. Being my first time at the Projects I wanted as much of the area in the shot as possible, definitely wanted the chopper and Keith.
Meanwhile though, once the action started, in the excitement of it all I threw on my long lens and started going for the tighter shots. Once I made the decision to switch it up to a wider lens I turned around and saw the image I wanted. But I had missed it. So I waited for Keith and the chopper to make a few more passes until everything lined up just right. To me this shot embodies my trip down to FL, and for the first time really taking the time to wait for ‘the decisive moment’.
