I’m always bitching to myself about “If” I had a winch of my own, I’d use it all the time and just drag it with me all over the place to shoot with various people in various places. Byerly let me borrow one of his winches for the Shane Bonifay photo seen in our front pages of The Standerd, Book 1.1.

Well, me “borrowing” the winch from Byerly turned into a four month “rental” of it literally sitting on my back porch doing nothing. I looked at it everyday telling myself, “damn I got to do something with that before Byerly notices it missing and wants it back.”

Finally, I hooked up the winch to my truck and called Chad Sharpe to go check out a possible ledge off the side of a road that I had found. After checking it out and realizing there was not enough water in the pond to hit the ledge, we left in dissapointment.

Nine times out of 10, just blindly searching for a spot to take the winch usually ends up with nothing to be found. However, this round we got lucky.

We saw a small creek off the side of the road and decided to take a chance by pulling off. As we drove along side of it we realized it just kept going and going, getting farther away from the road..meaning better chance of us not getting caught.

Chad set up the 55-gallon barrel on top of some concrete bricks we found. I positioned the truck/winch where we needed it, clamped some flashes in the overhanging adjacent trees, and let Chad get in some ollies and backside 180s over the barrel. Because I shot this digital, Chad reviewed the shot after each attempt and kept olling it until we were both happy with the results.

Our winching that day started off in dissappointment but ended in excitement…A rare outcome when aimlessly looking for a safe, “legal” winch spot.
